Lucky #11

Clint's favorite number is 11. He always tries to get number 11 for his sports jerseys.  He says it brings him good luck.
I think turning 11 is pretty lucky too.
For Kami's 11th birthday the skies wished her a Happy Birthday with this gorgeous sunset. Pretty lucky-
And she was able to blow all the candles out on her cake -lucky as well.
and she got a new ipod and gave her old one to her little sis. - Lucky for both of them.

And let's not forget about us. We're really lucky to have such a kind, sweet, precious 11 year old.
Yep, I'd say number 11 is pretty great.

It Finally Happened

As you may or may not know, three years ago, Clint and I bought a two-year old house. Here in Utah, when most people build a house, they move in first, and then put in their yard. The original owners of our house never got around to that part, so when we moved in, there was no yard, just a lot of dirt, and rocks.
-Well, no more.-
I'm happy to report that as of last Friday, July 15th, we finally have grass!
Putting in a yard with minimal hired help is a long tiring process. We tried to do as much as we could by ourselves.
Clint and my dad started in April moving rocks and installing the sprinkler system.
After doing as much as we could on our own, we had to hire out the rest. Someone to pour cement, build a couple of rock walls, bring in topsoil and grade the yard, and finally, someone to curb around the flowerbeds.
Here in Utah, the housing market is booming. We called 100's of landscapers who never called us back, and those that we were able to get a hold of were booked out for weeks/months. I'm an impatient person. When I'm ready for something, I want it right now. This was a hard wait for me. Finally, bit by bit, over the course of three months, we were able to get everything done.
After months of waiting, once things got started, everything seemed to happen all at once, and almost too quickly.
On Monday the topsoil people finished. Tuesday the "Curber" came. Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday we (and when I say we, I mean Clint) installed 1,567,899 sprinkler heads.
In fact, we were up until 3 am most nights trying to get everything done and ready for sod.
Our neighbors were awesome and also helped.
We had one neighbor that came over every night to help. Our other neighbor stayed up late combing the dirt to make it smooth and remove any rocks.
Speaking of sod, it was scheduled to be delivered Friday night, and we would install it Saturday just in time for the return of our three older children who were attending a church youth conference.
WRONG!
The sod trucks pulled up a little after 5:30 am Friday morning (Who needs sleep?)!
There was no way we could keep the sod outside in the heat and sun all day long, so after going back to bed for a couple of hours, Clint and I began laying sod.

We had some awesome helpers. The first to arrive was a sweet neighbor lady, no bigger than me, who came with her two children. Together we carried the large HEAVY (who knew grass could weigh so much) pieces of sod over to Clint who then put them in place. We worked for over two hours and finally finished the smallest section of the entire yard before muscle fatigue set in and lifting another piece of sod was impossible.
When I was wondering how we were possibly going to lay 20 more pallets of sod, more neighbors showed up to help -This time men!
They kept coming and coming and before I knew it, there were 10 men out there taking time away from their family to help us lay sod.  Each came on their own without being asked.
We were so grateful.
When we began laying the sod, we noticed that there were a lot of unusable dry crumbly pieces that fell apart when you went to pick them up. This was not good. We knew we had ordered a little bit extra (a little cushion), but with all this bad sod, we wouldn't be able to finish the entire yard, and would have to wait (ugh! that waiting game I "love" so much) for more to be delivered.
Somehow, even with several pallets-ful of unusable sod, we had just enough -just enough- to complete the yard. It was a miracle!
At the end of the day, as we sat on the patio looking out over our new yard eating Cafe Rio (that a thoughtful friend brought us), we were dirty and exhausted, but happy and very very grateful.

Be an Example and a Light

Yesterday was a dark and gloomy day.  It didn't rain or snow, but it was cloudy all day long.
Last night I glanced out my window to see the top of the mountain illuminated, while the valley below still sat in darkness.
It made me think of the prophet, President Monson's reminder in his latest conference talk to let our light shine.

". . .as the world moves further and further away from the principles and guidelines given to us by a loving Heavenly Father, we will stand out from the crowd because we are different. We will stand out because we dress modestly. We will be different because we do not use profanity and because we do not partake of substances which are harmful to our bodies. We will be different because we avoid off-color humor and degrading remarks. We will be different as we decide not to fill our minds with media choices that are base and demeaning and that will remove the Spirit from our homes and our lives. We will certainly stand out as we make choices regarding morality—choices which adhere to gospel principles and standards. Those things which make us different from most of the world also provide us with that light and that spirit which will shine in an increasingly dark world.

"It is often difficult to be different and to stand alone in a crowd. It is natural to fear what others might think or say. Comforting are the words of the psalm: “The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?” As we make Christ the center of our lives, our fears will be replaced by the courage of our convictions."

Such a good reminder for us all.
Don't follow the crowd!
 Go ahead, BE DIFFERENT!
"Bravely let your light shine for all to see"!

Sunset Hike

Wordless Wednesday

Randomness

 1.  We've been having some totally awesome sunsets lately.
We have not lately been having much snow.  There's a little on the ground from the last snow storm but not much.  I WANT A WHITE CHRISTMAS GOSH DANGIT!!!!!
I guess if we can't have snow, I'll take the painted skies.
They are really beautiful.
2.   Yesterday morning this tiny thing woke up with a headache.  I let her lay in my bed, hoping a little more sleep would cure her.  She never slept, but played with her My Little Ponies instead.  Then she decided she was hungry, so out to the kitchen we went.  I poured her a bowl of Rice Krispies.  Before she even took a bite, she accidentally spilled it because she was doing her Barbie Stylin' -Head's hair while eating her cereal.  UGH!  After cleaning up the mess and pouring yet another bowl of cereal, she decided her tummy hurt and back to my bed she went.  Right as I sat down to my yummy breakfast of latkes and applesauce (Hey!  It is Hanukkah) I hear crying coming from the bedroom along with barfing sounds.  Whenever you hear that combination you know it's NOT GOING TO BE GOOD!  Yep, throw-up - on my pillow.  Why oh why couldn't she have been on Clint's side?  I rush her off to the bathroom but of course she was all done vomiting by then.  Did I mention all over my pillow?  Into the bath she went.  I had 5 minutes to bathe her, get her dressed, and run #5 to school.  It was a miracle we made it.  I think I even set a new world record.  -NO LIE-
Once I called the school to excuse her because she was sick, a miraculous healing took place and she's been fine ever since.  No more headache, no more stomach ache.  (It's a Miracle!)
"So, Mom, what do you want to do today?"
"Aren't you so glad I'm home with you today so you don't have to be all alone?"
"Let's bake something."
"Can we make rainbow flower cookies?"
Sure thing!  But only because you're my baby and I like to spoil you and coddle you.
And that's the end of that.
3.  A boy Clint and I teach at church brought us a Christmas gift .  I think it's one of the sweetest things ever.  It made my day!
4.  Did I ever tell you about the time Clint was a human Christmas tree and all the kids at church got to decorate him?  That's the most handsome Christmas tree I've ever seen.  He even smelled like pine for the rest of the day (okay, no, not really, but that would have been really cool!)

5.  Christmas is in a week!  7 days!!!!  I had planned to finish wrapping my gifts today but that didn't happen (See #2), and  I'm starting to feel the crunch.

Be Still and Know that I am God

Psalms 46:10

Sometimes life gets hard, and frustrating, and worrisome, and depressing.  That's been my life the past few weeks.  I know it will get better.  I have the faith to make it through, but let's just face it, sometimes it's a lot to deal with all a once and you wonder if you'll ever make it through.
Last week I woke up to this:
gorgeous blue sky with bursts of white puffy clouds everywhere.
Then there was this pink sunset
That colored every single cloud in the sky from the east to the west.
The next morning, there was this sunrise.
It was as if the sky was on fire.
All a message to me from God to "Be Still", stop worrying, be happy, let Him be in charge.  He can create a much greater masterpiece with my life than I ever can on my own.

Word of Wisdom Family Night

Every so often we try to have a Family Night lesson dedicated to the Word of Wisdom.
Sometimes we discuss things that are good for our body such as exercise, and healthy eating.  Other times, we discuss things that are not good for us such as drugs, alcohol, etc.  We try to use this lesson as a way to inform our children of new things that have come about that we feel they should be aware of.  For example energy drinks (did you know some contain alcohol?), or the popular playground smiley face tongue sticker that contains acid.

Last night we discussed both the bad and the good. First, we discussed the somewhat-new teen trend called the E-cigarette, an electronic smokeless, tobacco-less way to smoke.  We warned our children that this is still smoking and it is a vice Satan is using to try to trick people into hurting their bodies (Did you know that just a teaspoon of liquid nicotine found in a e-cigarette can be lethal?)

After our discussion, we reminded our children of the importance of exercising our bodies by going on a hike.    PHEW!-

Just above our house is an awesome trail.
The leaves were beginning to change,
and the views are ridiculous

Luckily we made it up and back down just as the sun was setting.
(It wasn't really this dark yet.  It just looks that way because I had to use the flash.)
